SUMMARY:Blooming Underground with Mai’a Williams
DESCRIPTION:Blooming Underground\, a multi-media installation/performance/shrine by artist Mai’a Williams\, centers on their relationship to the Driftless natural landscape\, the sacredness of Black and First Nations’ lives and histories in this region and globally\, the healing traditions that they learned from their grandmother and elders in rural South Carolina. \nThis work explores questions such as: How do we exist in the face of uncertainty\, conflict\, trauma\, and death? How do we find meaning in crises? How do we rest and celebrate? How do we talk to our ancestors and our children? \nMai’a Williams is an interdisciplinary artist who primarily works in sculpture\, performance\, installation\, poetry and prose. Their studio\, curatorial and research-based practice weaves together their identity as a queer Muslim and a daughter of First Nations and Black American lineages\, as well as their experience as a midwife and a mother. Their work is a response to revolutionary mothering\, global Black death\, their African and First Nations ancestry and joy. It is a reflection of living and working with Egyptian\, Palestinian\, Congolese\, and Central American Indigenous mothers in resistance communities for more than 15 years. \nThe performance is free and the coffeehouse will open at 6 pm\, and the performance will begin at 7 pm. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Mn State Arts Board and the SE Minnesota Arts Council  thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

DESCRIPTION:Coffeehouse and Gallery open at 6:00pm\nBuy Tickets Online\nWith woodwind repertoire ranging from Baroque to Jazz\, the Winds of Winona offer something for everyone. The ensemble features Ryan Ballanger\, Chris Buswell\, and Ruth and Frank Bures on clarinet and bass clarinet along with Heidi Bryant on flute. All of the performers are members of the Winona Municipal Band and each perform as soloists as well as in other local and regional performing ensembles. \nThe program will be a mix of clarinet quartets\, flute and clarinet duets\, and quintets. Winona is home to many talented local musicians and this is a fun opportunity to gather and enjoy a variety of music in the wonderful Winona Arts Center venue. \nTickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Sam’s dialogue explores intersections of mental health and the creative process and his pursuit of well-being amidst the daily challenges of living with a serious mental illness. He will describe his definition of recovery and the sense of purpose he cultivates through quality engagement in career and family life. \nSam Miltich has played with Hot Club of San Francisco and toured internationally with world renowned Robin Nolan Trio. He has performed at Lincoln Center in NYC for the Django Reinhardt All Star Tour and has won numerous awards. \nChris Bates is a bassist of formidable talent. Winona is more colorful thanks to Sarah! \nA short program will begin at 2:30 pm with Sarah giving an overview of her activities and accomplishments during her tenure as Creative Laureate. \nAnd\, as always Sarah will provide a community art activity. \nRefreshments will be served and all are welcome.
