SUMMARY:Sgraffito Tile Workshop with Richard Spiller
DESCRIPTION:Saturday / August 19 / 12:00-3:00pm\nRichard Spiller\, a local potter from Wisconsin\, will present a Sgraffito tile workshop on August 19 from noon to 3 pm. Sgraffito (in Italian\, meaning “to scratch”) is a technique produced by applying a drawing to a hard\, red clay pottery piece and then scratching off parts of the layer to create contrasting images and patterns to reveal the clay color underneath. The tile is 8″ square and a simple design works best for this project. Students can bring their own drawings or use those provided. The tiles will be fired at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. \nCost is $30 for members of WAC and $35 for non-members. This informal event will feature the premiere of tracings\, a dance film created by Sharon Mansur in collaboration with Sydney Swanson\, director of photography. \nAlso enjoy a sneak peak into the tracings: creative walking project’s process with Mansur\, Swanson and Community Partner Alexa Shapiro from the Winona Outdoor Collaborative. Marty Walsh with the Minnesota Driftless Hiking Trail will also be there to discuss an exciting initiative to create a 100-mile footpath across southeastern Minnesota. \nFree admission\, open to all ages\, no reservations needed. His main vehicle is the piano merged with electronics. Daniel’s compositions resonate with both seasoned musicians and casual listeners\, creating a profound impact on a diverse audience. \nIn addition to his solo projects\, he has established a successful full-time career in film composing. His evocative scores have been featured in numerous films and his music has been listened to over 30 million times. As a composer\, Daniel’s primary objective is to create music that elicits deep emotions\, fostering a unique connection with each listener. DESCRIPTION:Friday / October 20\, 2023 / 7:00pm\nThis 1981 documentary film is directed and produced by Jon H. Else. The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967)\, the theoretical physicist who led the effort to build the first atomic bomb\, tested in July 1945 at the Trinity site in New Mexico. It features interviews with several Manhattan Project scientists\, as well as newly declassified  archival footage. The film’s title comes from an interview seen near the conclusion of the documentary. Oppenheimer is asked for his thoughts on the talks to stop the spread of nuclear weapons: “It’s 20 years too late. It should have been done the day after Trinity.” \n88 minutes. English.
