SUMMARY:Putting A Value On Your Work – Artist Development Workshop Series w/ Jovy Rockey & Anne Scott Plummer
DESCRIPTION:How do you place a value on a creative work that has come from your own heart and inspiration? How do we\, as artists\, measure our art in terms of time\, financial investment\, and worth? Hear from two artists who have learned a great deal on this topic through their experiences and artistic practices. \nJovy Rockey is a artisan jeweler and owner of ORNO Gift + Home in Winona\, MN. Since 2011\, Jovy has been creating and selling her jewelry direct to clients\, at fine art and craft festivals\, small markets\, and in boutiques and galleries. Her experience as an artist and as a shop owner has given her a robust understanding of the importance and the challenges of how you place value on your work. In June of 2019\, Jovy wrote a feature article in the online publication\, Handmade Sellers Magazine\, which highlights the thought process behind raising her prices and the ways it benefitted her business. Over the years\, Jovy has empowered many artists to prioritize their art and to understand how pricing impacts their livelihood. \nAnne Scott Plummer is a ceramic artist who creates both functional pottery and sculpture. She has made a livelihood from these pursuits for several decades\, and has approached the question of putting a value on her work from many angles. She has sold her work through galleries\, stores\, art fairs\, online\, and from her studio. Her current studio is Island City Clayspace\, a storefront in downtown Winona\, where she periodically organizes a pop-up gallery\, and also sells her work at other local galleries\, art fairs and the farmer’s market. She is a retired art professor\, and has helped many students investigate the critical issue of valuing their work. “Artwork has a personal value for artists\, but that is not the same as the market value of a piece of art. DESCRIPTION:The Sgraffito Tile Workshop has been cancelled. The next Sgraffito workshop is scheduled for November 2. https://winonaarts.org/classes/ \nWinona Arts Center welcomes potter Richard Spiller for a Sgraffito Tile Workshop September 14\, 2024 from 10am to 2pm. Participants will scratch a design of their choosing or creation on either 9 – 4” tiles or 4 – 6” tiles. Each tile is red earthenware leather hard clay with a white slip that has been applied. Pieces are then bisque fired and then Richard will apply a clear glaze and fire again\, then return to the Art Center at a later date. \nCost is $35 for members and $40 for non members. \nPayment is to be made to WAC at 228 E 5th  St\, Winona MN 55987. \nEmail: jsbenson50@gmail.com  for questions and to register to save your spot! Our brains are hardwired to seek out connections with our fellow humans — two dots and a curved line become a smiling face\, we can see people in the shapes of clouds and shadows. Whether crude stick figures\, near photographic renderings\, chiseled sculptures\, or artistic abstractions\, the human body has been a continual source of artistic inspiration. \nThe tradition continues and Figure Drawing carries on that sense of artistic wonder. SUMMARY:Tibetan Singing Bowls with Joan Filla
DESCRIPTION:Tibetan singing bowls produce sounds that invite deep states of relaxation\, enhancing the ability to meditate and enter expanded states of consciousness. The sounds and vibrations can create a sense of grounding\, facilitating a connection to the deepest parts of our being\, and opening the door to powerful healing. This is an opportunity for exploration and renewal in the presence of ageless bell sounds. You are invited to wear comfortable clothing\, as you will be able to sit or lie on the floor as you prefer. Bring a yoga mat\, pillow\, blanket or anything else that helps with comfort and relaxation. Chairs will be available. At the end of the session\, there will be time for questions\, a demonstration\, and hands-on experience with the bowls.   \n\nEvent is limited to 40 attendees.  Bring a yoga mat to lay on if you wish to lie down during the session or you may sit in a chair. Their soaring harmonies (‘blood harmony’ was how one fan described it)\, fascinating double dulcimer work\, and the mix of 6 and 12 string guitars\, blend with a wide choice of songs. In one concert\, they combine their originals\, plus traditional songs\, and choice compositions of contemporary songwriters. A concert by these two masters of their craft is an immensely satisfying and restorative experience. Time has only deepened and enriched the music they create together. \nClaudia and Sally have been perfecting their craft of performing for almost four decades\, both as solo artists and as a duo. Claudia’s is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music\, poetry\, story\, laughter\, drama\, and celebrating the moment. Work in clubs\, theaters\, festivals\, TV\, radio has added depth and dimension\, and since she has always included her original work along with very personal versions of the work of others\, what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity\, humor\, and wonder. You never know what’s going to happen next\, chances are it’s going to be wonderful\, every moment is burned into your memory and you know you’ll never be the same again. More succinctly\, Garrison Keillor said “when Claudia sings a song\, it stays sung”. \nSally Rogers began her career as a full-time touring musician in 1979\, after encouragement from Stan Rogers\, the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter. That was followed by an invitation from Garrison Keillor to appear on A Prairie Home Companion. She appeared more than a dozen times on that show\, which launched her performing career. Her travels have since taken her to Europe\, China\, Hungary and Poland\, England and Scotland and across the United States. Her concerts enfold the audience in the music as they are encouraged to join in throughout the evening.
