DESCRIPTION:Friday / May 5\, 2023 / 7:00pm\nPlease join us for some food\, fun and a film. Enjoy some salsa\, chips\, non-alcoholic sangria and more … \nFeaturing the classic 1954 film\, Salt of the Earth. This is one of the first films to advance the feminist social and political point of view. Its plot centers on a long and difficult strike based on the 1951 strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County\, New Mexico. The film shows how the miners\, their families\, the company and the police react during the strike. The story of the film’s suppression\, as well as the events it depicted\, inspired an underground audience of unionists\, leftists\, feminists\, Mexican Americans and film historians. The film found a new life in the 1960s and gradually reached larger audiences through union halls\, women’s associations and film schools.

On May 13\, participants will roll out slabs of red clay and press the clay into a plastic mold of their choice. Each participant will make two of the pressed molds. The molds will be bisque fired at Spiller’s studio. \nOn May 20\, participants will paint the fired molds and apply a glaze. The molds will be fired a second time at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. The student can choose to skip the second class and simply use acrylic paints at home. DESCRIPTION:Paintings and Ceramics\nMay 14 to June 24\, 2023 \nExhibit Opening: Sunday / May 21 / 2:00-5:00pm\n3:00pm / Shared Stories about Jean and her creativity\n3:30-5:00pm / Potluck Celebration\nJean loved color. It permeated all of her life. Even when she encountered numbers\, she also saw their color. When asked what she would have done if she hadn’t pursued a career in Early Childhood Education\, she said “I would have been an artist.” She spent years playing with clay\, both on the wheel and by hand\, developing quite a colorful\, unique style in majolica. Her favorite medium became watercolor. It challenged her and provided lots of satisfaction. Even after her stroke in 2018\, when she lost many abilities\, she continued with her painting. It was a real testament to the power of creativity. It brought her and those around her much joy and enhanced her quality of life. May her love of color touch your heart\, too. \nThe family of Jean Billman is generously donating the proceeds from the sales of her works to the Winona Arts Center.
