DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception:\nSunday / January 19\, 2025 / 1:00pm – 4:00pm\nExhibit Dates:\nJanuary 19 – March 2\, 2025\nThe Mississippi River is the backbone of the United States. Its waters carry our grain\, our ore\, our history\, our dreams. Creations of music\, art\, and stories are deposited on the flood plains of Old Muddy. Pete’s images explore the unique and sometimes hidden culture that flows from this Great River\, from the headwaters in Northern Minnesota to the delta south of New Orleans. Tom’s poetry provides a sensitive and sometimes powerful reflection inspired by the images. While each photograph/poem pair provides a single snapshot in time of a small piece of the river experience\, the viewer is connected through the shared experiences of everyone who lives near the river. The overall goal of this exhibit is to show how the Mississippi River experience is powerful\, making us stronger than the divisions that are receiving so much attention these days.\n \n\nPete Mutschler is a Winona MN based photographer and Tom Gillaspy is a Stillwater MN poet.\n \n\nWAC activities are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern MN Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

DESCRIPTION:Are you ready for a reprieve from the cold winter? Come join us at the Winona Arts Center for a fun evening of food\, film\, wine and warm conversations on January 25\, 2025. Enjoy charcuterie board appetizers\, desserts\, wine\, non alcoholic beverages & coffee while watching the French film The Taste of Things starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel. \nDoors open at 6:00pm and the movie begins at 7:00pm so come early to enjoy your friends. The Taste of Things is a film by Tran An Hung and is set in France in 1889. It follows the life of Dodin Bouffant as a chef living with his personal cook and lover\, Eugenie. They share a long history of gastronomy and love but Eugenie refuses to marry Dodin so the food lover decides to do something he has never done before: cook for her. \nThis film has been selected by Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. The Wall Street Journal is quoted as saying “This film leaves one feeling a little drunk\, desperately hungry and entirely alive.” \nTickets on sale beginning December 30 are $25 and available at Music Mart (formerly Hardt’s Music) and Eventbrite until 4pm on January 25.

DESCRIPTION:Course Dates: January 29\, February 5 & February 19 (3 Week Course)\nCourse Time: 5:30pm – 7:30 pm\nCost: $150\nThis three week workshop is brought to us by Preston Lawing\, an award winning professor and collaborative printmaker who has worked and exhibited with numerous artists and printers for over forty years.\nPreston Lawing taught for 24 years at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota\, retiring in 2021 as Professor Emeritus in the department of Art and Design. His most recent Dry Point Etching workshop at the Winona Arts Center was well received by a capacity group of energetic\, creative students. \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the technique of Chine-Collé\, a Chinese paper collage method that enhances printmaking or painting\, adding texture and pattern to the surface. \nThe course will cover both the practical aspects of creating prints and the historical context of the medium. \nParticipants will learn how to prepare printing plates while working with a variety of glues and binders\, the importance of layering and overlaying paper textures\, how to use a variety of printing plates and matrices\, work safely in a printmaking studio\, and will develop an understanding of the significance of Chine-Collé in art history. \nParticipants do not need to have strong drawing skills\, but a willingness to explore different markmaking choices which should provide lifelong joy of this simple\, additive process. \nDue to the technical information and processes covered\, this course is suited for artists 18 and up. Get tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/radoslav-lorkovic-tickets-1134260326169 \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. His tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta\, Jimmy LaFave\, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute\, Greg Brown\, Richard Shindell\, Ellis Paul\, Ronny Cox\, Dave Moore\, Andy White\, and Bo Ramsey. His thirty year touring career has led him from the taverns of the upper Mississippi River to the castles of Italy\, The Canary Islands\, The Yup’ik villages of Alaska\, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Born in Zagreb\, Croatia in 1958\, Lorković’s initial exposure to music can be attributed to two grandmothers. Antonija\, his maternal Grandmother\, sang him Croatian\, Slovenian and Czech folk songs since birth. At age one he was reported to be singing back on pitch. By age three he was putting on floor shows for his grandfather and friends who would respond by showering him with coins yelling “pivaj Radoslav pivaj!” During this time classical music played in the home constantly due to the influence of his paternal grandmother Melita Lorković\, a internationally renown classical pianist. After this blend of central European musical influences Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. \nAfter several years and countless hours of expounding on this spark\, Lorković began touring at age 20 with Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorković entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons\, Pete Johnson\, Freddie Slack etc.. Ramsey’s influence drove Lorković deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorković’s focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins. Several years later Lorković and Ramsey joined forces with Greg Brown adding musical authenticity to his deep Iowa Roots. At this time Lorković was simultaneously brushing up on his classical heritage and looking south to the polyrhythmic sounds of Professor Longhair and James Booker. He had picked up Tex-Mex and Zydeco accordion as well. In 1990 he made his solo recording debut. Six CDs later\, Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas.

DESCRIPTION:Course Dates: January 29\, February 5 & February 19 (3 Week Course)\nCourse Time: 5:30pm – 7:30 pm\nCost: $150\nThis three week workshop is brought to us by Preston Lawing\, an award winning professor and collaborative printmaker who has worked and exhibited with numerous artists and printers for over forty years. \nPreston Lawing taught for 24 years at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota\, retiring in 2021 as Professor Emeritus in the department of Art and Design. His most recent Dry Point Etching workshop at the Winona Arts Center was well received by a capacity group of energetic\, creative students. \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the technique of Chine-Collé\, a Chinese paper collage method that enhances printmaking or painting\, adding texture and pattern to the surface. \nThe course will cover both the practical aspects of creating prints and the historical context of the medium. \nParticipants will learn how to prepare printing plates while working with a variety of glues and binders\, the importance of layering and overlaying paper textures\, how to use a variety of printing plates and matrices\, work safely in a printmaking studio\, and will develop an understanding of the significance of Chine-Collé in art history. \nParticipants do not need to have strong drawing skills\, but a willingness to explore different markmaking choices which should provide lifelong joy of this simple\, additive process. \nDue to the technical information and processes covered\, this course is suited for artists 18 and up.
