With original members Wayne Beezley; mandolin and octave mandolin\, Rick Sampson; banjo\, guitar and mandolin\, Betsy Neil; fiddle\, they added a new bass player\, Larry Dalton\, and continued honing their skills. \nWayne Beezley\, landed in Winona after performing with the notable Bluegrass band\, Monroe Doctrine\, which was based in Colorado. Wayne’s time with Monroe Doctrine took him to major festivals\, college campuses\, and other popular venues across the country. This band was cutting edge Progressive Bluegrass and influenced many young musicians\, bringing this style of bluegrass music to the Midwest in the ‘70’s. He currently performs locally with The Bus Boys and String Ties. \nSince 1977\, Rick Sampson has been delighting audiences with his innovative banjo playing with a variety of bands including The Riverbenders\, Traveling Kind\, and Suite Grass. He has worked with a variety of bands including a Scottish Rock group\, Peter Ostroushko\, Kate Mackenzie\, Chris Silver\, Brian Wicklund\, and jazz violinist Randy Sabien\, to name a few. He placed second at the Telluride festival in the banjo competition two years in a row. Also\, after attending the Red Wing Technical College\, he started making banjo bridges that are sold internationally and used by prominent musicians worldwide. He has crafted and sold wooden flutes and flat picks as well. \nBetsy Neil began learning music on violin and piano as a child. As a young adult she continued to perform in symphonies\, string quartets and theater pits\, but soon became interested in swinging her bow in a different direction. In the mid-seventies she developed a strong interest in fiddling and studied a variety of styles including Bluegrass\, Appalachian old time\, Swing\, Celtic\, and Cajun. She has performed in numerous string bands\, the most notable being\, The Buffalo Gals. Currently she performs with the Twin Cities based Cajun band\, Roux La La and Winona Symphony\, as well as anything else that calls for a violin or fiddle. \nRich Casey\, first performed with Opposable Thumbs about 20 years ago. Rich is a musical man about town who\, in addition to providing a solid musical foundation to the High 48s’ hard‐driving bluegrass sound\, keeps a busy performance schedule lending his doghouse skills to a wide range of musical situations. \nThis performance is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of Merchants Bank\, Dahl Auto\, and Affinity Plus.

SUMMARY:Radoslav Lorković
DESCRIPTION:Radoslav Lorković at the Winona Arts Center\n$15 Adv / $20 at the Door\n7pm – 9pm\nCoffeehouse and gallery open at 6pm.\nTickets are available at Music Mart (formerly Hardt’s Music) and Eventbrite for $15 in advance and for $20 at the door. Get tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/radoslav-lorkovic-tickets-1134260326169 \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. His tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta\, Jimmy LaFave\, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute\, Greg Brown\, Richard Shindell\, Ellis Paul\, Ronny Cox\, Dave Moore\, Andy White\, and Bo Ramsey. His thirty year touring career has led him from the taverns of the upper Mississippi River to the castles of Italy\, The Canary Islands\, The Yup’ik villages of Alaska\, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Born in Zagreb\, Croatia in 1958\, Lorković’s initial exposure to music can be attributed to two grandmothers. Antonija\, his maternal Grandmother\, sang him Croatian\, Slovenian and Czech folk songs since birth. At age one he was reported to be singing back on pitch. By age three he was putting on floor shows for his grandfather and friends who would respond by showering him with coins yelling “pivaj Radoslav pivaj!” During this time classical music played in the home constantly due to the influence of his paternal grandmother Melita Lorković\, a internationally renown classical pianist. After this blend of central European musical influences Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. \nAfter several years and countless hours of expounding on this spark\, Lorković began touring at age 20 with Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorković entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons\, Pete Johnson\, Freddie Slack etc.. Ramsey’s influence drove Lorković deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorković’s focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins. Several years later Lorković and Ramsey joined forces with Greg Brown adding musical authenticity to his deep Iowa Roots. At this time Lorković was simultaneously brushing up on his classical heritage and looking south to the polyrhythmic sounds of Professor Longhair and James Booker. He had picked up Tex-Mex and Zydeco accordion as well. In 1990 he made his solo recording debut. Six CDs later\, Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas.

SUMMARY:Mississippi Hot Club
DESCRIPTION:$20 advance (+ processing fees) \n$25 door \nTickets are available on Eventbrite until October 26 at 4:00pm. \nCoffeehouse & gallery open at 6:00pm on October 26. \n“Over the past five years\, this quintet has become one of the Midwest’s preeminent string bands. Originally an homage to French Gypsy Jazz\, the quintet’s music has begun to take on a more eclectic\, adventurous persona as other influences have crept into the palette.” \n-Twin Cities Jazz Fest\, 2017 \nMississippi Hot Club is inspiring a new generation of young swingers in Minnesota. With reverence and chops\, Mississippi Hot Club’s new album\, Swing Cities\, shines light on the bold music of Django Reinhardt from a fresh pop-oriented perspective. \nRecorded at Wild Sound Recording Studio in Minneapolis\, Swing Cities masterfully captures MHC’s spunky performances\, featuring an upbeat approach to jazz manouche\, hot club jazz\, and gypsy jazz. Swing Cities captivates with its high caliber swing and rhythms that run from cool to fiery. \nJoshua Parlanti’s engaging improvisation on lead guitar is complimented by the fierce solos of violinist Alissa Jacobsen. This fearless duo is supported by la pompe rhythm guitarists Ian Stenlund and Luke Zupan\, along with airtight upright bassist Joseph Downing. \nSpanning several eras of Django’s repertoire\, Parlanti conveys his melodies on acoustic and electric guitar\, playing with a recognizable “Gypsy” flair. His approach is soulful and refreshing\, hitting on the more frisky verve that people in the 1930s heard in Django’s playing. On intimate ballads that round out the album’s spectrum of moods\, Parlanti skillfully debuts dreamy Steinway piano performances. \nIn a still growing jazz tradition now elevated in the Twin Cities\, Swing Cities charmingly combines a vintage feel with modern artistry. \nNote: Eventbrite’s fee is non-refundable.
