We see the totalitarian societies they promised built and the brutal measures used to enforce their ideology. SUMMARY:A Visit from Will Dilg
DESCRIPTION:Tickets $10 in advance at Music Mart (formerly Hardt’s Music) until May 3 at 5:00pm or Eventbrite until May 4 at 3:00pm.\nCoffeehouse & gallery open at 6:30pm\nBuy Tickets Online\nSteven Marking plays Will Dilg in an inspiring multimedia presentation\, A Visit From Will Dilg. In the early 1920’s Will Dilg’s only son drowned in the Mississippi River. Dilg rose up from the depths of depression and mourning to become a tireless\, fanatic firebrand – leading an extraordinary national crusade to form the Izaak Walton League and save a 261 mile stretch of Mississippi River Backwaters we now know as the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. While his life was cut short\, his accomplishments are still legendary\, and we all will benefit by hearing from him on the 100th Anniversary of the Refuge\, which is in 2024. \nA Visit From Will Dilg was created by Steven Marking for the Centennial celebration of our Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The script relies heavily on Dilg’s own published words. Images and film clips of the glories of the refuge are the stars of the show. As the story unfolds as told by Dilg\, we are constantly reminded of the things that were saved – the plants\, the animals\, the birds\, the fish\, and the scenery. \nBy the 1020’s river land reclamation\, or the filling in of floodplain wetlands\, was at its peak in our countries history. Ground zero for the battle was the Winneshiek Bottoms near Lansing\, Iowa\, which was already legally permitted to be leveed off\, drained and filled to create farmlands. Dilg took the loss of wetlands and the fish and wildlife that went with it personally and started the battle against reclamation by forming a national coalition of outdoorsmen called The Izaak Walton League. In less than one year they pushed federal legislation through congress to form the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. This saved a large portion of our Upper Mississippi River lands from development\, and more than 4 million people visit and enjoy the refuge every year today. It is the largest contiguous floodplain habitat in our nation. \nWinona Arts Center activities are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Frozen River Film Festival at the WAC—Reprise: Local Films
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing local talent\, this set features locally-made films which have had prior screenings in the Winona area. \nHealthy Lake Winona\nA group of local citizens formed the Healthy Lake Winona group with the goal to improve the water quality of Lake Winona after it was designated as an impaired body of water by the MN Pollution control Agency. “Healthy Lake Winona” follows the efforts of local organizers dedicated to cleaning up Lake Winona and includes the group’s efforts to address stormwater runoff\, invasive species\, shoreline erosion and an excessive goose population. \n  \n\nSee You At No Name\nThis documentary short film delves into the heart of No Name Bar in Winona\, MN\, not just as a venue for incredible live music but as a vital hub for community and artistic expression. Through dynamic footage of live performances and heartfelt interviews with the bar’s owners and local musicians\, the film unravels the symbiotic relationship between No Name Bar and the vibrant arts community in Winona. It showcases how this establishment has become more than just a venue; it’s a nurturing space that fosters connections\, amplifying the voices of local artists and musicians\, making it an indispensable pillar in Winona’s cultural landscape. \nVisit: DuncanWellcome \n  \n\n \nArtemis\n“Artemis – In Celebration of Seasoned Women” is a documentary film celebrating women who defy the notion that “women of a certain age” become invisible in society. “Artemis” challenges that mindset by showcasing and showing off a wealth of seasoned female artists\, activists\, wise owls\, biz wiz’s\, makers\, movers and shakers. “Invisible Woman Syndrome”\, (much-hyped by the media) begs the question “Invisible to whom?” \nVisit: http://www.facebook.com/papercatfilms \nThe WAC is pleased to host screenings for the FRFF on February 5\, 6\, 10 and 11. SUMMARY:Frozen River Film Festival at the WAC—Blurring Borders: Cinema & Home
DESCRIPTION:Co-curated by Michelle Baroody and Sharon Mansur \nShowcasing Arab and SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) artists and filmmakers\, this set of short films challenges documentary form as well as common narratives/images of immigration and displacement. The makers featured in this segment use cinema to expand visibility both within and outside their ancestral homelands\, interrogating the policies that enforce borders and mass displacement. The films in this program depict home\, place\, identity\, and belonging\, as well as loss\, scattering\, and letting go\, and in addition to challenging the arbitrary lines on maps\, they challenge the boundaries between documentary and narrative cinema and between reality and fiction. Inviting participants and audience members to consider new ways of looking at home\, immigration\, and exile\, this film program reflects on both past and present to consider a different future\, one that can be found through art practice. A short discussion with local artists and programmers will follow the films. \nPresented in partnership with The Cedar Tree Project\, Frozen River Film Festival\, and Mizna. \nThe Cedar Tree Project presents\, supports and amplifies contemporary art and artists of Arab/SWANA heritage and regions\, inviting deeper understanding\, empathy and engagement through artistic exchange. www.cedartreeproject.com \nMizna is a critical platform for contemporary literature\, film\, art\, and cultural production centering the work of Arab and SWANA artists. https://mizna.org/ \nMichelle Baroody is an educator and a film curator\, who currently resides in St. Paul\, Minnesota.
