SUMMARY:Sgraffito Tile Class with Richard Spiller
DESCRIPTION:Saturday / March 25\, 2023 / 1:00-3:00pm\nThis class was very popular last year so we are bringing it back this spring. Sgraffito is a pottery decorating technique where multiple layers of colored slips are applied to a leather hard tile and then removed by scratching off successive layers of colors to reveal the layers underneath. \nStudents will each be given 8-inch tiles to draw on the tile and scratch off the excess clay. Students can bring their own drawings or use those provided. The tiles will be fired at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. SUMMARY:Sgraffito Tile Workshop with Richard Spiller
DESCRIPTION:Saturday / August 19 / 12:00-3:00pm\nRichard Spiller\, a local potter from Wisconsin\, will present a Sgraffito tile workshop on August 19 from noon to 3 pm. Sgraffito (in Italian\, meaning “to scratch”) is a technique produced by applying a drawing to a hard\, red clay pottery piece and then scratching off parts of the layer to create contrasting images and patterns to reveal the clay color underneath. The tile is 8″ square and a simple design works best for this project. Students can bring their own drawings or use those provided. The tiles will be fired at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. \nCost is $30 for members of WAC and $35 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:The Sgraffito Tile Workshop has been cancelled. The next Sgraffito workshop is scheduled for November 2. https://winonaarts.org/classes/ \nWinona Arts Center welcomes potter Richard Spiller for a Sgraffito Tile Workshop September 14\, 2024 from 10am to 2pm. Participants will scratch a design of their choosing or creation on either 9 – 4” tiles or 4 – 6” tiles. Each tile is red earthenware leather hard clay with a white slip that has been applied. Pieces are then bisque fired and then Richard will apply a clear glaze and fire again\, then return to the Art Center at a later date. \nCost is $35 for members and $40 for non members. \nPayment is to be made to WAC at 228 E 5th  St\, Winona MN 55987. \nEmail: jsbenson50@gmail.com  for questions and to register to save your spot! DESCRIPTION:Course Dates: January 29\, February 5 & February 19 (3 Week Course)\nCourse Time: 5:30pm – 7:30 pm\nCost: $150\nThis three week workshop is brought to us by Preston Lawing\, an award winning professor and collaborative printmaker who has worked and exhibited with numerous artists and printers for over forty years.\nPreston Lawing taught for 24 years at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota\, retiring in 2021 as Professor Emeritus in the department of Art and Design. His most recent Dry Point Etching workshop at the Winona Arts Center was well received by a capacity group of energetic\, creative students. \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the technique of Chine-Collé\, a Chinese paper collage method that enhances printmaking or painting\, adding texture and pattern to the surface. \nThe course will cover both the practical aspects of creating prints and the historical context of the medium. \nParticipants will learn how to prepare printing plates while working with a variety of glues and binders\, the importance of layering and overlaying paper textures\, how to use a variety of printing plates and matrices\, work safely in a printmaking studio\, and will develop an understanding of the significance of Chine-Collé in art history. \nParticipants do not need to have strong drawing skills\, but a willingness to explore different markmaking choices which should provide lifelong joy of this simple\, additive process. \nDue to the technical information and processes covered\, this course is suited for artists 18 and up.
