SUMMARY:SuminagashiScape: The Driftless with Dawn Tevis
DESCRIPTION:Saturday / October 22 / 10:00 am-12:00 pm\nSuminagashi is an ancient and meditative Japanese marbling art that was practiced at least as early as the 12th century. This project is designed to help people connect more deeply to their local landscape by creating environment-inspired paper marbling art. Suminagashi stations will be set up that allow participants to experiment with a few ink prints in an indoor setting. Most other events have been outdoors. DESCRIPTION:Richard Spiller\, potter and ceramic artist\, will present a glazing workshop at his studio in Urne\, Wisconsin. Participants who have produced works at Spiller’s classes held at the Winona Arts Center will travel to his studio and glaze the pottery. \nIf students are not able to make the trip to Urne\, they can email Richard to discuss the colors they wish for the glazes. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Mary Lee Eischen\nIn this workshop\, we will create a collage of our hopes and dreams for this year of 2023. We’ll begin the workshop with a guided visualization to bring us into relaxation\, connect us with our body and stir our imaginations into making. We’ll have the opportunity to create our own images and designs with paper along with stitching. Images\, words and phrases will be available to use for our creating. SUMMARY:Sgraffito Tile Class with Richard Spiller
DESCRIPTION:Saturday / March 25\, 2023 / 1:00-3:00pm\nThis class was very popular last year so we are bringing it back this spring. Sgraffito is a pottery decorating technique where multiple layers of colored slips are applied to a leather hard tile and then removed by scratching off successive layers of colors to reveal the layers underneath. \nStudents will each be given 8-inch tiles to draw on the tile and scratch off the excess clay. Students can bring their own drawings or use those provided. The tiles will be fired at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. DESCRIPTION:Saturday / April 15\, 2023 / 1:00-3:00pm\nStudents will be given nine tiles on a board. They will draw on each tile and then apply colored slips and clear glaze. Students can bring their own design or trace designs that are provided. Tiles will be fired at Spiller’s studio and returned at a later date. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 5/11/23 — This two-part class has been canceled due to low enrollment.\nSaturday / May 13\, 2023 / 12:00-3:00pm\nand\nSaturday / May 20\, 2023 / 12:00-3:00pm\nEach class is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. \nThis is a two-part class. On May 13\, participants will roll out slabs of red clay and press the clay into a plastic mold of their choice. Each participant will make two of the pressed molds. The molds will be bisque fired at Spiller’s studio. \nOn May 20\, participants will paint the fired molds and apply a glaze. The molds will be fired a second time at Spiller’s studio and returned to participants at a later date. The student can choose to skip the second class and simply use acrylic paints at home.
